Local Salons - New Beginings

Partnerships with young local volunteer coordinators in Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna and Mexico City
.

Salon Tel Aviv

Salon Tel Aviv was initiated by a few Israeli Jews on January 2008 as a branch of the global Jewish Salons project . Our interest is to create a Jewish-cultural scene that meets Israeli and non-Israeli artists and explores the Jewish story from cultural dimensions that are of interest to us, as secular Israeli individuals. As part of the Jewish Salon global network, we wish to invite and involve Israeli and non-Israelies in our cultural happenings, and contribute to the enriching of our mutual cultural language and heritage.

Our vision

An alternative non-institutional Salon, organized around a café-bar including cultural facilities (books, music and DVD libraries, exhibition space, space for performances and discussions). The Salon will be a home for Jewish cultural happenings in an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, addressing Jews from all backgrounds and inviting them to take part in it. As such, Salon Tel Aviv will offer events and develop a cultural content platform for cultural correspondence and interaction with other developing Salons in the global network.

Objectives

•  In the next 2 years: Conduct monthly Jewish cultural events under the Jewish Salons project umbrella.

•  Export available contemporary Jewish cultural goods for usage in other developing Salons.

•  Establish a permanent venue for Salon Tel Aviv , as a Jewish cultural café-bar.

•  Create a circle of participants who are involved and who take in the Salon's activity on all levels.

Target population

Our target population is young adults, Israelis and non-Israelis.

2007

Budapest is the city where the majority of Hungary 's estimated 50-150,000 Jews live, probably the largest European Jewish community after Paris and London . Budapest also serves as a focal point for many of the Balkan and eastern European smaller communities. In addition, the social connections of some of the Israeli members with younger representatives of the Jewish Budapest community already created a local interest in joining the realization of Salon Budapest .

The group of involved members in Israel have come together in June 2006 with the intention to realize a pilot Salon in Budapest. We began by reaching out to Hungarian Jewish individuals living in Budapest.

2005

The Israel Forum - a 1985 non-profit organization expanding the range of personal contacts between Jews from Israel and elsewhere in the world – hired Benny Bailey to do a field study of the interest young Jews in urban European communities have towards their Jewish edge. After visiting Budapest , Berlin , Stockholm , Athens and London, meeting dozens of local young Jews, and listening to their Jewish interest and needs – the idea of the Jewish Salons was born .
